Hi Katie,
Hope your dissertations going well!
So, a recent piece of work that we did was a self initiated brief reimagining wine:
As this was self initiated we could do whatever we wanted so we just went for an image-led design that focussed on the flavour profiles of each wine illustrated through colour and pattern. This was well received amongst other designers/ on instagram/ behance.
On the other hand, one of our most successful designs, in terms of happy client and good sales was (quite a while ago now) Amazebites:
This design is purely typographic which helps to communicate the proposition of the product (They’re amazing and they’re bitesize) which helps consumers understand what the product is as they’re strolling around the supermarket. Had we gone for a purely image based design it would have confused consumers and be too high brow and arty.
Other design that I like:
Anything that Anagrama have done is usually a pretty good benchmark for well good packaging http://www.anagrama. com/project/capicua
This is quite old, but still uber contemporary - Nuts.com by Pentagram
And I don’t know who did the design for this but I really like this boozy ice pop design atm
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Chris

Q.1
Successful is a funny word…
Kamera Ventoux EP:
The Ventoux EP we did for Kamera was for me a successful piece of work. It also received acclaim from the record label and the artist who gave us free reign to do as we pleased along as we used a specific image.
Instead of impeding on the image we decided to only use the the back of the record sleeve to create a well crated piece of typographic design. We wanted the type to be expressive but it also needed to the legible and read correctly for it to be truly successful.
After numerous sketches and versions the end result ticked both boxes for expressiveness and legibility. It also translated well to the remix artwork and to posters that sold out through the record labels website.
Coldplay Timeline:
The Coldplay timeline we launched around 2 years ago for us has been a successful project. We set out to design a system that could be easily edited and used by the Coldplay team who update the website and create something that would produce quality user generated content.
To achieve this we created a modular system where the Coldplay team could create custom page layouts using ‘widgets’ which consisted of text widgets, video widgets, image gallery widgets, etc. This was a successful outcome as the timeline has developed and grown without the need of involving us, it was all created by the people it was designed for.
We also designed a widget that would allow users to upload content that was Coldplay related which achieved the objective as the timeline is now full of user generated content which gives the product a human feel and allows fans to participate in the bands activity.
High Contrast Night Gallery:
The artwork we created for 'Night Gallery’ High Contrast’s album was in our eyes successful. We aimed to create a high quality piece artwork that wouldn’t look out of place in a iconic row of album covers.
We commissioned a neon sign to be made in a bespoke typeface to be used as a key visual on the album cover.
The client was super happy with the outcome and so were we. We saw comments online stating it’s his best artwork so far and we felt it is probably the best artwork we have created for an album so far due to the level of production, photography and design.
Q.2
As you can see from the 3 projects I have mentioned we were successful in our eyes due to us having an objective.
We set out a goal and we achieved that goal. It’s hard to determine success without having an objective to achieve.
Is 'successful' a subjective term or a objective term? Or is it both? What I might think is successful you may not and vice versa. Even in the studio we have different tastes and opinions, which is important as it pushes you to move out of your comfort zone and makes you see things from other perspectives.
I could give you a list as long as my arm of pieces of design that I think are successful but If you asked me why the reasons could be drastically different.
From ‘This brand identity has achieved success due to the style of imagery that is used which really connects with there customers’ to ‘I like it there for it is successful’.
I wont’t give you reasons to as and why but here is a list not quite as long as my arm and you can decided why I thought it may be successful.
EE Brand creation — Wolff Olins
Rapha Mondial custom typeface —Colophon Foundry
Unknown Pleasures Joy Divison artwork — Peter Saville
